COMMERCIAL

This year we are awarding a Most Intriguing Award and an Honorable Mention

Home Improvement and Energy Conservation Laboratory
Submitted by Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven, Inc.

This project caught the Jury’s attention immediately, and all really liked the effort put into a very limited project, but considered it enough to be given an Intriguing award. It is located in the heart of the neighborhood that it serves, the intent is to incorporate as many features into demonstration projects for the neighbors to not only see what can be done but also examine the installation for ideas and methods to undertake by themselves.
The immediate impact is to view the original building and the renovation done to show that anything can be created out of a very limited potential and budget. The jury was somewhat disappointed in the actual photos submitted, since the idea is worthy of a better award but unable to demonstrate the intent yet since it has not been fitted out to the level they expect they will be able to put together.

Highlights of the Design

• Extremely small space opened up into a very successful demonstration that we believe will only get better upon completion
• The ability to achieve LEED Gold with a minimum impact on the community and budget
• Photovoltaic plans to provide complete energy needs for this building
• Total Reuse of all materials within the structure.

General Electric Energy Financial Services
Submitted by Perkins Eastman Architects

This project receives our Honorable mention Award. The project was a retrofit of an existing Corporate Headquarters into new Financial Services Offices for GE. The feature of the design is to obtain LEED GOLD for Interiors. Additionally, a key feature in the design process was to use the circulation system as information to its employees on the active participation that GE has committed to in the development of various Green technologies. Obviously, the design utilizes maximum natural day-lighting, all materials from sustainable recycled manufacturers.
As opposed to the other award winner, it demonstrates what a major corporation should be undertaking it all of its efforts to provide the public and its employees the best sustainable and healthy environment.

PUBLIC/SCHOOLS

This year we are awarding a Most Intriguing Award and an Honorable Mention to our largest group of submissions

Darien Library
Submitted by Peter Gisolfi Associates - Architects/Landscape Architects/Interior Architects

This project receives our Most Intriguing Award. Of the many submissions this clearly was able to bridge a gap between traditional architecture and excellent sustainable attributes into a cohesive design. The community looked to the design team to provide them with a design that maintains an image that was important to the Town, yet provides the very latest in technology and sustainable goals they project set as their goals. It clearly integrates both the technical needs with the desired efficiency a library demands.

Highlights of the design:

• Geothermal wells used as both heating and cooling source
• Heavy Mass to provide thermal comfort
• Choice of materials to minimize maintenance
• Located on a Brownfield site and incorporated water conservation on site for grey water usage with the building
• Automated material handling, eliminates wasted effort by staff
• A circulation system that allows any visitor to orient themselves without fear of getting lost.

Amistad Building – Yale Medical Center
Submitted by The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company

This building receives our Intriguing Award. It is a fine example of the reuse of an existing building originally created for another use. This is a 120,000 Square foot building transformed from an office building to a research building that achieve LEED GOLD for Interiors, Considering it is a research building the energy savings achieved are incredible enough to warrant an award. This is a handsome building that has achieved unparallel success in its operation and efforts to obtain performance set forth by the client.
